Dr Samuel Kwok, FCA (UK), FHEA, is Senior Associate Professor in Accounting and Deputy Head of the Department of Accounting at the International Business School Suzhou (IBSS), Xi’an Jiaotong−Liverpool University, China, where he also serves as Deputy Director of the Research Cluster of Excellence − Business Education Research. He holds a doctorate in Professional Studies (Policy Management) from Middlesex University, London, and pioneered a transdisciplinary approach to practice−led research (PLR) through the Policy Actors’ Group research paradigm and the Role−based Narrative Policy Framework.
Trained as a UK Chartered Accountant with experience at two Big Four firms, Dr Kwok is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and is listed on the UK’s FCA Register. He is a specialist in the bullion market and has acted as principal advisor to the Hong Kong Gold Exchange on the ‘Shenzhen−Hong Kong Gold Connect’ initiative; his monograph ‘Strategy of China Bullion Market Integration and its Financial Impact’ was published by People’s Daily Press. His current research applies do−calculus and Bayes’ theorem to audit data analytics, alongside a practice−led approach to branding strategy through role theory within the meso−level narrative policy framework.
Prior to joining IBSS in 2016, Dr Kwok held CFO (China) and General Manager (China) roles at two Hong Kong−listed companies, and later established his own consultancy undertaking government−industry projects. He directed the MSc Professional Accounting programme from AY2018/19 through AY2023/24, served as Academic Director of Executive Education (2018−2019), and managed corporate training programmes for CRRC, Sodexo, and Santoni between 2018 and 2026. He currently chairs the audit committee of a company listed on the STAR Market of the Shanghai Stock Exchange, edits the IBSS Case Book on AI transformation in Chinese organizations, and acts as an external examiner for PhD theses.
His commentary has featured in leading media including Xinhua News Agency, 21st Century Business Herald, Canvas8, NHK, Times Higher Education, ABC News Australia, TATLER Asia, The Conversation, Channel News Asia, and Sina.com. He received the Teaching Excellence Award from the International Association of Accountants, UK, in 2017, and the IBSS Contribution to Education Research Award for 2021/22 and 2024/25.
